Ever notice how the health and wellness world tries to convince you that more is always better? More rules, more trackers, more information crammed into your already overflowing brain? Yeah, I used to be part of that problem. In this episode I get real about how I used to coach women (spoiler: it involved handing over a small novel of information in session one) and why that approach was quietly setting my clients up to feel like failures. I'm breaking down why one simple habit done consistently will always beat five habits done occasionally, why this matters even more in perimenopause and menopause, and why I'm bringing my SUSTAIN nutrition coaching program back this September with a whole new look. Twelve weeks, one focus, zero fluff. Grab your coffee and let's talk about why less really is more.

Let's talk.

Welcome to Her Season of Strength, where women over 40 reclaim their bodies, their energy, and their voices, without apologies. I'm Kim Duffy, registered dietitian, personal trainer, mom, and your biggest hype woman when it comes to aging like you mean it.

This show isn't about chasing skinny or counting wrinkles. It's about building real strength: physical, emotional, and hormonal. Each week, I'll share straight-talking nutrition tips, sustainable fitness strategies, and conversations that help you feel powerful in your skin once again.

Menopause is not an ending, it is only the beginning. This is your season of strength.

What I Cover in This Episode:

  • Why I used to hand every new client a mountain of information (and thought I was helping)
  • The real reason a binder full of macros, workouts, and journaling prompts backfires by day three
  • What decision fatigue actually does to your brain and your self esteem
  • The one habit rule that beats five habits every single time
  • Why your bandwidth in perimenopause and menopause changes the whole game plan
  • The truth about simple: it is not the lesser plan, it is the plan
  • Why nutrition is the one area I tell every midlife woman to focus on first
  • The trap of trying to fix your eating, workouts, and stress all in the same month
  • Why I brought SUSTAIN back after stepping away, and what is different this time.  Join the SUSTAIN no obligation Priority List here.
  • What twelve weeks of focused nutrition coaching can actually do for your energy, sleep, and mood

[00:00:00] Hi there, and welcome to Her Season of Strength, where women over 40 reclaim their bodies, their energy, and their voices without apologies. I'm Kim Duffy, registered dietitian, personal trainer, mom, and your biggest hype woman when it comes to aging like you mean it. This show isn't about chasing skinny or counting wrinkles.

[00:00:20] It's about building real strength, physical, emotional, and hormonal. Each week, I'll share straight-talking nutrition tips, sustainable fitness strategies, and conversations that help you feel powerful in your skin once again. Menopause isn't an ending, it's only the beginning. This is your season of strength. Hello, and welcome back to all you beautiful ladies.

[00:00:42] Thank you for just taking a few minutes to hang out with me on Her Season of Strength. So today I wanna talk a little bit about my coaching style when I first started, and how that has evolved and changed, and why I felt important [00:01:00] for it to evolve and change. So when I first started coaching women, I would sit down with a brand-new client, and I would hand her everything.

[00:01:10] Meal plans, a macro assessment, breaking down, all of her protein and carbs and fat and calories. I would give workout recommendations, supplement suggestions, sleep hygiene tips, stress management tools, and everything I knew all at once in week one. And I did that because I wanted her to see how much I knew.

[00:01:31] I wanted her to feel like she was getting her money's worth, and I thought more information equaled more value, and more value equaled better results. And I was wrong. I'm admitting it. But it took me a little while to realize that and to admit that openly. So today I wanna talk about why handing you everything was actually doing you a disservice, what I have learned instead about how real [00:02:00] change happens, and I wanna build on something we talked about in the last episode, which was number 49, about keeping things simple.

[00:02:09] And then I wanna tell you something I'm super excited about. I'm bringing back my nutrition coaching program called Sustain this September after taking about a year, over a year off and it's gonna look different this time. It's and that's on purpose. I'm opening the priority interest list, so if you aren't already on it and are a menopausal woman who, would like some help, some guidance, accountability, motivation to make those healthy nutrition changes that you can sustain for the long term, not just short-term quick fix stuff, I'm gonna drop the link to get on the no obligation priority list where you can kinda get all the updates on the program as soon as I have them, 'cause it's evolving right now.

[00:02:49] So let's get into today's topic. First, I wanna talk about what I used to do, because I think a lot of you've been on the receiving end of this kind of coaching, whether it was from me or someone else. And here is [00:03:00] what a typical first session used to look like. I would ask, get a full picture, and I still like to get this, but my the way that I take that, process it, and what I give back to you is what is different.

[00:03:15] But, we'd start, we'd look at what are your specific health wellness goals? We'd look at, what about your past history when it comes to diet or your medical history, supplements, medications, exercise habits. Usually we walk through a five to se- five to seven-day food recall or even just a 24-hour recall.

[00:03:38] We talk about your stress, your sleep, and then I would basically unload this gigantic plan. Here's your full macro breakdown. Here is your workout schedule for the next, 12 weeks. Here's a grocery list. Here's a supplement protocol. Here is a mindset journal I want you to fill out every morning and go, [00:04:00] right?

[00:04:00] And it felt generous. It felt thorough, and honestly, I felt like I was proving I deserved to be s- trusted with her health, and I wanted her to like me, and I wanted her to all the information she was getting. But here's what actually happened on the other hand. She would go home with this binder of information, and by day three, she wasn't following the macros, she wasn't doing the workouts, and she definitely wasn't journaling.

[00:04:27] Not because she didn't care, not because she wasn't capable, but because I had just asked her to change six things all at once while she was still working full-time, raising kids, scheduling around act- around activities, travel, family vacations having a relationship with your spouse and trying to get enough sleep.

[00:04:47] All these things, and that, what I was creating was decision fatigue, and that is what happens when your brain has to make the hundred new choices a day instead of one. And here is the thing you don't realize is [00:05:00] when you fail, at five or 10 things all at once, you do not feel like you succeeded at anything.

[00:05:07] You feel like you failed at absolutely everything. And what does that do? That gives you a kick right in the stomach as well as a kick to that self-esteem and that self-confidence. And that feeling is what makes people quit and makes you never wanna feel like that again, so you really hesitate to make any positive changes 'cause you're just like, "Oh you know what?

[00:05:27] I'm just gonna fail. It's just gonna... It's not gonna work." And so I had built a system that looked impressive on paper and set women up to feel like failures within a week and I tell you what it didn't feel good. That was never my intention, but it was the result, and once I saw that pattern over and over, I couldn't unsee it So if handing over everything doesn't work, what does?

[00:05:53] And this is similar to what we talked about last episode, and I wanna build on that here because it matters that [00:06:00] much. One habit done consistently will always beat five habits that are done occasionally. Always, and it's not even close. And here is why, because our brain builds neural pathways through repetition and consistency, not through massive amount of information.

[00:06:23] You could know everything there is to know about protein intake, but if you're not actually eating enough protein at breakfast every single day, that knowledge does nothing for your body. Doing beats knowing every time. And I can't tell you how often I have women who come to me initially, and they're like, "I know a lot about nutrition," or, "I know a lot about exercise, but I'm struggling to do it.

[00:06:48] I'm struggling to actually follow through with it." This matters, especially for us, in peri and post-menopause, because our bandwidth is already stretched thinner than [00:07:00] it used to be. Our sleep is disrupted, our moods can shift without warning, our brain fog is real, and I don't care what anyone tells you.

[00:07:09] So when I ask a woman in this, season of her life to change one thing instead of six, I'm not lowering the bar. I'm working with her actual capacity instead of against it, helping her to feel that something is doable and build confidence that she can do it and achieve it. And I wanna say this super clearly, simple is not the lesser version of the plan.

[00:07:36] Simple is the plan. When we strip away everything that isn't essential, and we focus on the one change that will move the needle most, you're not settling, you're just being strategic. And if you think about it this way, if you tried to learn five new skills all at once, you would probably get mediocre at all five.

[00:07:57] But if you focused on one skill until it [00:08:00] became second nature or habit, you would actually get good at it, and then you would have real capacity to add the next one. And that is how sustainable change works. It stacks, and it doesn't sprawl And I'm right there with you. I'm, I'm right there post-menopausal, same season of life, and I'm navigating these same hormonal shifts, my own energy changes, my own relationship with food that has had to evolve.

[00:08:29] And through that experience, plus watching and walking through it with hundreds of clients, I've landed on something I believe pretty firmly, and that's if there... if a woman in midlife is gonna focus on one area of health, nutrition is the first place to start. Not because movement doesn't matter.

[00:08:50] You could just be exercising amazingly. It absolutely does. And it's not because mindset doesn't matter, because it does too. But nutrition is that [00:09:00] foundation that everything else sits on top of. So if your nutrition is scattered, your energy for workout suffers, your sleep suffers, your mood suffers, your health.

[00:09:12] When you get your nutrition dialed in, even just one piece of it, everything else gets a little easier to tackle. And here is the trap I see so many women fall into, and that's if they try to fix their eating, their workouts, their stress all in that same month, and because they are spread across all three fronts, they don't get traction on any of them.

[00:09:33] And within six weeks, they're right back where they started, except now they feel worse because they feel like they failed again. And I'd rather you go deep into that one system, like nutrition and specific nutrition habits, that will provide you with the best results. So I'm not talking about, oh, we need to just focus on vitamin B12.

[00:09:55] That's not what I mean. I'm talking about what pieces [00:10:00] of nutrition are gonna help to build better energy, decrease your cravings, decrease those, joint aches and pains, and improve your overall health This helps you to build something that actually sticks rather than watching those, wheels spin trying to overhaul your entire life at once.

[00:10:18] So one system done well, it can change everything else downstream, and that's the whole philosophy behind my Sustain program. If you've been listening for a while, you might remember this program. I ran it in early twenty twenty-five, and then I stepped away from it and focused on my Fit After Fifty Plus program, which integrated both the nutrition and the fitness.

[00:10:39] And honestly, I kinda needed that time. I needed to sit with wasn't-- what wasn't working both for my clients and in my own life before I brought that back. And here is what is different this time. I made Sustain twelve weeks. I have offered it up at six and eight weeks, and people have said that they wanted it to be twelve weeks.

[00:10:58] Up from what it used to be [00:11:00] because, we know that those real habits, they take time. They take longer than a few weeks to actually settle into your life. And I've narrowed that focus. So this round of Sustain, it's nutrition only. No more trying to layer in workouts and mindset work and everything else at the same time.

[00:11:14] One system, twelve weeks, built specifically around what menopausal women actually need, and that's less brain fog, better sleep, more energy, more stable moods. And all of these things, I promise you, can be tied back to nutrition. We're not gonna walk through the whole curriculum today because honestly, I want you to experience it rather than just hear about it.

[00:11:37] But I can tell you this, that every week builds on the last. We're not gonna be throwing information at you and hoping that something sticks. We're building one system just one piece at a time so that by week twelve, you're not just following a plan, you have a new normal. And this is for those, menopausal women, as we all have, we're-- we get tired of starting over.

[00:11:59] We've [00:12:00] tried the diets and the meal plans and the macro trackers and the six-week challenges and ended up back at square one every single time So if that's you, I built this round of Sustain with you specifically in mind, because I know that is me. That is me in a previous life. So enrollment opens for the new Sustain program in September.

[00:12:20] I'm gonna be sharing more details here on the show, as well as to the priority list as we get closer. So for now, just know it's coming, and it's different. And join the priority list if you would like to be eligible for the lowest price I'm gonna offer it. You can get early access, and I am-- I'm also gonna offer up the best bonuses for the program.

[00:12:42] That's just always the way I do it for those early... For those people who are early enrollers, I wanna give them some bonuses, some benefits. So let's bring this episode all back together. I used to think my job was to hand you everything I knew to make myself feel [00:13:00] knowledgeable and help you to under- you know, help you to feel that I knew what I was talking about.

[00:13:04] And now I know that my job is to help you build one thing so well that it becomes automatic, and then we build the next thing on top of that. So simple changes, but done consistently. They're not the easy way out. They are the way that actually works, especially when, your bandwidth is already stretched.

[00:13:24] So that's why last episode, we talked about starting small. We talked about breakfast, and that is why nutrition is that one focus for the Sustain this fall. And that is why it's 12 weeks, 'cause real change, we need room to breathe. So if you take one thing from this episode, let it be this. You don't need to overhaul your whole life this week.

[00:13:43] Pick the one thing, do it well, and let it stick. Maybe that's just you're gonna try to get in an extra serving of vegetables each day. Maybe that's you're g- you know, you're gonna try to get in that protein at breakfast. [00:14:00] Maybe you're gonna try to get in a little bit more fluid intake. I don't know. But pick that one thing and focus on that one thing this week.

[00:14:09] So if this episode landed for you, hit follow on the podcast so you don't miss what's coming as we get closer to September. And if you know a friend who needs to hear that she does not have to fix everything all at once, send her this episode, 'cause that's how our little community grows, one share at a time.
